Lucasfilm’s newest animated series premieres Oct. 7 on Disney Now, and we sat down with several cast and crew members to find out more about Star Wars Resistance.

Star Wars Resistance starts roughly six months before the events of The Force Awakens and will follow a young pilot named Kazuda Xiono, who is recruited to be a spy for the Resistance by Poe Dameron.

His mission takes him to a large floating installation called the Colossus, where he goes undercover as a pilot just looking to make a name for himself against some of the best pilots around.

But there’s a lot more to Resistance than the official logline, so here are nine things we learned about the show and the people behind it.

“We all know who the true star is…it’s definitely BB-8.” – Suzie McGrath

BB-8 has stolen the heart of everyone working on Star Wars Resistance, especially Suzie McGrath, who plays Tam Ryvora.

While she was a casual fan of Star Wars before she was cast as Tam, Suzie McGrath has jumped wholeheartedly into a new level of education and appreciation for Star Wars. That appreciation extends to her character, who she hopes will be an inspiration to viewers both for her intelligence and skills.

You’ll get to know Tam. Born on Kuat (my table full of Star Wars nerds all said “Oooooh!” in unison at that), Tam aspires to be a pilot but fell on hard times, and now she’s a mechanic on the Colossus who’s trying to get back in the air.

Family is definitely the theme of the show

Much of the story centers around Team Fireball, and while it takes place in a larger setting, the story follows Kaz and the friends he makes: Tam, Neeku, Torra Doza, and Yeager.

To keep that sense of togetherness, most of the actors record with each other and really enjoy it. It’s clear from talking to them that everyone gets along and has been having a lot of fun with the whole experience.

Look for a sibling type of relationship between Tam and Kaz. She’s not too sure about him when she meets him, but McGrath says they’ll be going on a journey together.

Bobby Moynihan is a huge Star Wars fan and is thrilled to be a part of ‘Star Wars Resistance’

Moynihan, who actually built his own R2 and owns a lot of Star Wars memorabilia, plays a Chadra-Fan named Orka. He works with his buddy Flix (Jim Rash) and describes the Colossus as a floating cantina and truck stop — the kind of place we haven’t really seen in Star Wars to date.

From what we’ve seen, we’re guessing Orka and Flix are going to be fan favorites.

Matt the Radar Technician is sorry for what he did to Tim the Stormtrooper

Bobby Moynihan didn’t just play a role in SNL’s Undercover Boss parody with Kylo Ren, but he helped write it. He is now the proud owner of a Kylo Ren helmet signed by Adam Driver that reads, “To Tim, I apologize. Love, Matt” and he also has “Matt”‘s name tag.

Amusingly, Moynihan says he saw a large group of Matts at Star Wars Celebration and asked for a picture. None of them recognized him. I’ll bet they’re kicking themselves now!

‘Star Wars Resistance’ has something for everyone, with nods to all of the trilogies

While the show is set six months before The Force Awakens, you’ll immediately notice lots of classic creatures on the Colossus. Executive producers Justin Ridge, Athena Portillo, and Brandon Auman are all fans of the prequels, so you’ll definitely see nods to them (keep an ear out for for a very familiar announcer’s voice) in the characters. The same goes for tech. You’ll see old tech and new tech overlap.

Keep an eye out for Orka and Flix’s pit droid affectionately known as Glenn.

R2-D2 made Donald Faison want to be an actor when he was 3 years old

Faison, whose character Hype Fazon was created specifically with him in mind, told us that seeing R2 on screen when he was three made him want to be an actor.

When asked who he connects to most in the Star Wars universe, he immediately said Lando Calrissian, as he was the first black person in Star Wars.

Faison is also really excited to have his name be a part of Star Wars. Like, really excited. You could almost say “hyped.”

‘Star Wars Resistance’ has already been screened for kids, and they loved it.

Resistance is for fans of all ages but is targeted towards kids 6-12. According to Justin Ridge, “Testing was through the roof.” He also said kids gravitated toward Kaz.

Part of that may be due to Kaz’s confident but clumsy attitude — kids can relate to being a little awkward — but Kaz also commits 100% to everything he does. He’s old enough to know what’s wrong but young enough to make mistakes. The key thing is he learns from his mistakes.

Christopher Sean, who plays Kaz, says the clumsy goofiness is all him. He says he borrowed Kaz’s charm and charisma from Han Solo, mixed in Poe Dameron’s instinct and rebel attitude, and took the navy feel from his father.

Kaz comes from a wealthy family, which makes him a little different than other Star Wars heroes we’ve seen before

If you look at the past, most Star Wars heroes come from a modest background. Like Leia, Kaz was raised in a wealthy household and notable family. He’s already a pilot in his planet’s Navy when he’s recruited by Poe Dameron. But Kaz is also a kid trying to figure out who he is in the world and doesn’t use his position against others.

Kazuda Xiono is also estranged from his father, which makes his time on the Colossus rather interesting — especially when he gets into trouble.

Why is ‘Resistance’ set 6 months before ‘The Force Awakens’?

While much of the series is concentrated on the people and events at the Colossus, this time frame allows viewers to make the connection to characters they know, especially kids. BB-8 is a character kids already know and love, so it gives them a reference point for the story.

Like BB-8, Leia, Poe, and Phasma come in as connecting points, but the show is still very much focused on new characters, so don’t look for a lot of existing characters to cross over.

The timing also allows them to access events in The Force Awakens and, possibly, beyond that. This is a new experience because it’s the first time a show is being created at the same time the films that are closest related are also being released.

Ultimately, however, keep in mind that the show itself is light-hearted in nature. There are still stakes, but don’t look for heavy drama, especially in the beginning.

From everything I heard, I’m more excited for Star Wars Resistance than ever.
