Those living outside of Canada may not know that there are quite a few original programs in the maple syrup-loving country.

LOST GIRL

Lost Girl is the story of Bo, a woman on the run who discovers that she is a Succubus one of dozens of Fae (supernatural beings), thrust into a world she knows nothing about.

The series follows Bo as she learns more about the world of the Fae and begin to interact with it while struggling to maintain her sense of self.

This is an awesome show which reminded me of the good old days of the beginning of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This is a fresh show with an ensemble cast and an interesting approach to all things supernatural. If I had to mention a highlight of this show it would be the energy and snark brought to the show by Ksenia Solo who plays Kenzi, Bo’s best friend.

RADIO FREE ROSCOE

Four High School friends set up their own pirate radio station when their school radio station cracks down on their freedom of speech.

I heard a lot about this show and it drew it fair share of comparisons with Degrassi which is HUGE. The show is so much more than you might think at first glance. Think Saved By the Bell but still relevant.

The LA Complex

The L.A. Complex is a Canadian drama series chronicling the lives of six sexy young performers living in an apartment block all trying their best to realise their dreams of stardom. We follow the ups and downs in their lives as things don’t work out as planned as they attend acting auditions, comedy gigs and work in the studio.

How to describe the L.A. Complex? I will start by saying it was one of the best series I have seen, it is equal parts compelling and gritty. I hesitate to use the word gritty with its sometimes negative consequences but that is what it is, a lot of shows aimed at the teen/young adult market will show sometimes show the more negative aspects of life, drink drugs etc but the LA Complex pulls no punches and shows us exactly how dark things can be.

TODD AND THE BOOK OF PURE EVIL

Todd, Curtis, Jenny, and Hannah are students at Crowley High, the only high school in a small town secretly founded by Satanists. After encountering a cursed magical tome with a mind of its own, the Book of Pure Evil, which grants the wishes of those who hold it in dark and sinister ways they didn’t intend, they team up in an attempt to track down and destroy the Book.

A High School sitcom with swearing, gore and fantasy elements what is their not to like? Sure it is a little childish in some respects and if you’re looking for character arcs and real believable growth then you have come to the wrong place. This is just a fun escape for half an hour with some hilarious stuff thrown in.

ENDGAME

The series follows former World Arkady Balagan (Shawn Doyle), a genius who uses his analytical skills to solve crimes. The show starts three months after the death of Balagan’s fiancée Rosemary, where Balagan has developed agoraphobia. Balagan uses those faculties he honed playing chess to help him solve cases.

This show peaked my interest as soon as I read about it and I found that the show surpassed my expectations. Balagan is hilarious and a perfect as a flawed genius and his team are somewhat reminiscent of House. The show only lasted a short season but it is definitely worth a watch.
