Once thought to be dead on arrival after a rocky launch early last year, the 3DS had a strong holiday season and has come storming back.

Nintendo announced yesterday its latest handheld has sold over four million units since going on sale in North America in March 2011.

The majority of these sales have taken place after the major price cut the system took in early August after the system had only sold 830,000 units in its first four months on the market.

It was also revealed that Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have sold over one million units each.

It’s no surprise that the system did not sell well until Nintendo’s heavy-hitting first party titles were released for it. Hopefully this will teach the company something for its next major release, the Wii U.

Have you bought a 3DS yet? What games are your favorite on the system?
