The Host movie will be released next week, and we are taking a look at the three must haves in order for the movie to be successful. This is Stephenie Meyer’s first adventure outside of the world of Twilight, and fans are anxiously waiting to see if The Host has the same magic as the vampire series.

The Setting

One of the things that make The Host so very different from Twilight is that it takes place in the desert in an elaborate underground cave system. The setting is almost like another character, it lives and breaths with its inhabitants. The caves also set up an eerie place for Wanda to explore, and at times try to survive. The setting also gives a feeling of despair. This group of humans have etched out a meek existence in the middle of no where in order to survive the invasion. They are living underground to avoid the parasitic aliens, and the dreariness of that is in direct contrast to the bright utopian world the aliens have created.

The Relationships

The Host may be about an alien invasion, but let’s face it: they take a backseat to the love triangle that takes place. Maybe it is more like a square: three bodies, four souls – needless to say it is complex. The weight to pull this off is on Saoirse Ronan’s shoulders. Ronan will have to play both Wanda and Melanie, and sometimes at the same time. The two souls fight for the same body and the love of two very different men. Wanda is a complex character that understands her role in helping conquer the human race but also feels conflicted – especially with Melanie constantly telling her she’s wrong and showing just what she has destroyed. The relationships are a delicate balance of love and hate in an unstable world. The relationships play a key role in the story and if they aren’t believable, the story won’t be either.

The Seeker

The Seeker, played by Diane Kruger, is the antagonist. The Seeker chooses Wanda to take over Melanie but later realizes it may have been a mistake. The Seeker is meant to make people feel conflicted. She believes that her people are doing the right thing by taking over the human race in order to help civilize the planet and make the human race peaceful. While one understands her intentions it should not come at the price of the human race, and this is the biggest conflict that the Seeker represents. Diane Kruger needs to embody righteousness and be unflinching in her belief in what she is doing.
