Now that the holidays have passed, it’s time to start thinking about what to use your gift cards on (assuming you haven’t spent them already, you impatient little whippersnappers). This list is going to cover a broad range of products but will be very nerdy tinged.

Without further ado:

Electronics

Kindle – The Kindle is the top selling eReader in the world. In the month of December alone, it sold about a million units every week. Many are opting for the Kindle Fire, which allows users to surf the web, download apps and of course read books. Think of it as an inexpensive iPad. The least expensive Kindle runs a decent $79 while the Fire is at a reasonable $199.

Nintendo 3DS – The Nintendo 3DS had a shaky launch with a poor game line-up and an expensive retail price. However, prices were slashed and the game library has expanded to include some great titles like Super Mario 3D Land and Ocarina of Time.

PlayStation Vita – The Vita isn’t out yet but you can pre-order it for $249. The Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet and Resistance series will all have a game in the launch line-up.

Books

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin – If your a fantasy fan and haven’t checked out the A Song of Ice and Fire series then you’re a little late to the party. Better late than never I suppose.

11/22/63 by Stephen King – King’s latest novel details the account of a man who goes back in time to stop the JFK assassination. This isn’t typical King horror fair and has broader appeal.

Video Games

Skyrim – Bethesda does it again but even better. Explore the world of The Elder Scrolls. Mind the Draugr.

Uncharted 3 – Naughty Dog have crafted another gaming masterpiece. With huge set pieces and intriguing back story, Uncharted offers a wild ride.

Batman: Arkham City – Batman returns with new villians and gadgets. Quality comic book games don’t happen often so don’t miss this one!

Film

Drive – Drive was my favorite film of 2011. It doesn’t drop until the end of January but you can pre-order it now on most online retail sites.

The Lord of the Rings (Extended Blu-Ray) – If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan, chances are you own the Extended Sets. Well, get them all on Blu-Ray for a cool $50 at most online retail sites.

Midnight in Paris – Woody Allen offers a romantic comedy starring Owen Wilson and Marion Cotillard. Take note, this is how romantic comedy should be done.

Beginners – An interesting movie starring Christopher Plummer, Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent. Oliver (McGregor) reflects on his father’s (Plummer) life and strives to use the lessons his father taught him in his new relationship with Anna (Laurent). A great independent film.

Anime

Samurai Champloo – Available on Blu-Ray and DVD, Samurai Champloo follows two warriors and a waitress has they track the sunflower-scented samurai. Knew that would hook you.

Dragon Ball Z 1.1 and 1.2 – I know, I know. How many times are they going to re-release this series? Rest assured, if you haven’t already invested in other sets then these new Blu-Ray packages are the way to go. Containing original aspect ration, each Blu-Ray set has 17 episodes. These first two together cover the Saiyan saga.

Claymore – I’ll just leave this here – (from Amazon) A brutal scourge stalks the land. Yoma, monsters driven by a hunger satisfied by only one quarry – Humanity. The dark breed knows but a singular foe: Claymore. Human-Yoma hybrids of extraordinary strength and cunning, the Claymores roam from skirmish to skirmish delivering salvation by the edge of a blade.

Comics

The Walking Dead – If you haven’t started reading this series, I suggest picking up the omnibus and getting the following trade paperbacks. Then you can get the single issues or wait six months for the next trade.

Batman (New 52) – Scott Snyder is currently writing the main Batman series for DC. Four issues in, he is doing an outstanding job. You can also pick up the graphic novel The Black Mirror while you’re at it.

The Sandman, Vol. I – A new edition of Neil Gaiman’s masterpiece The Sandman has been published in paperback form. Great way to dive in.

TV Shows

Game of Thrones – You can pre-order this great series based on George RR Martin’s novel now.

Shameless – William H. Macy leads this adaptation of the British TV show, featuring the dysfunctional Gallagher family.

Books for Younger Readers

The Giver by Lois Lowry – This book was recently made available for $0.99 on the Kindle store, so I felt I should make the recommendation here. You can also pick up the physical copy on the cheap as well and I suggest you do so. It is an amazing read.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick – The inspiration behind the outstanding motion picture Hugo is a magical read for all ages.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children – A mysterious and imaginative tale of a boy named Jacob who sets out on an adventure to discover his late grandfather’s past.

Random

The Lord of the Rings Pez Dispenser Collection – Pez is an Austrian candy that has become popular the world over. They taste even better when you’re eating them out of Lord of the Rings characters.

Harry Potter Clue – Make sure to pick up the 2011 edition as it is agreed to be the better edition compared to the one before.

There you have it, twenty five items to spend your holiday money on. Of course, these are just my suggestions. What are yours?
