Corey Hawkins is our new Jack Bauer (-type character) in Fox’s 24 reboot, 24: Legacy.

24 fans were wondering how Fox’s planned revival series could possibly go ahead without Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack Bauer — and now we know.

Variety reports that 27-year-old Corey Hawkins, best known for playing Dr. Dre in Straight Outta Compton and Heath in The Walking Dead, is our new lead hero.

His character is not another Jack Bauer: Hawkins’ character name is Eric Carter, described as “strong and smart.”

The description goes on to outline Eric’s army vet background: “Eric came from a very rough background and turned his life around in the Army Rangers. Now back home in Virginia with his wife Nicole (yet to be cast), he’s pulled back into action as his past comes looking for him.”

The full synopsis for 24: Legacy reads:

“24: Legacy” will revolve around a military hero’s return to the U.S. and the trouble that follows him back — compelling him to ask the CTU for help in saving his life, and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil.

The 12-episode miniseries will continue the popular format of 24, but presumably each “hour” of TV will actually cover two hours of real time. Hawkins will star opposite a female lead who has not yet been cast.

Corey Hawkins is also set to star in the King Kong prequel Skull Island, which is set for release in 2017. Hawkins is in fine company, starring opposite Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tom Hiddleston.
