Last night’s BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) ceremony saw our usual suspects reap more pre-Oscar glory: Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Theory of Everything were among the honorees.
Sometimes it feels like all these pre-Oscar award ceremonies only exist to give us indicators about which films will reign supreme on the Big Night.
But ceremonies like the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice Awards and the BAFTAs sometimes surprise us, and hand out awards to creatives who were snubbed by the Academy. Let’s see how last night’s event measured up.

The 2015 British Academy of Film and Television Arts ceremony honored Richard Linklater’s Boyhood epic, giving it the Best Film, Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette) and Best Director statuettes.
Leading Actor went to Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything (which also picked up Best Adapted Screenplay and Outstanding British Film), while Leading Actress went to Julianne Moore for Still Alice.
Grand Budapest Hotel scored no less than five awards (out of the 11 it was nominated for), making it the biggest winner (quantitatively) of the evening.
Surprisingly, The Imitation Game picked up none of the nine awards it was nominated for. Birdman also failed to make an impression, winning only one award (for Cinematography) out of nine.

The Lego Movie, surprisingly snubbed by the Academy, won for Best Animated Feature, while the excellent Pride picked up the Outstanding Debut by a British Actor, Director or Producer award.
