ABC has announced that this Sunday’s 2014 Oscars will stream live online for the first time in the award ceremony’s history, but there’s a big catch.

The 2014 Oscar live stream will only be accessible to those who are subscribers of certain cable companies in eight markets. The approved cable companies are: Comcast, Cablevision, Cox Communications, Charter Communications, Midcontinent Communications, Verizon FIOS, Google Fiber, and AT&T U-verse. The cities are New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh-Durham, and Fresno.

Those who match these two requirements will be able to watch live via the Watch ABC app available for download via Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, and the iTunes App Store. You’ll also be able to watch in a browser via Oscar.com, ABC.com, and WatchABC.com.

While the news is good for those in the eight selected markets with the aforementioned cable companies, this will leave many who wish to watch online without official access. One of the bigger companies notably missing from the list is Time Warner who holds big subscriber bases in Los Angeles and New York.

The 2014 Oscars hosted by Ellen DeGeneres will air this Sunday, March 2 at 8 p.m. eastern, 5 p.m. pacific. A complete list of presenters can be seen in our previous article. Click here for a list of the nominees.

Will you be able to watch the 2014 Oscars live online?

Hopefully ABC will continue to expand this service to more regions and cable companies next year. Many people – particularly young adults – have been switching from cable to computers to watch television online as a means to save money.
