The 2014 Emmys were memorable for good and bad reasons. Let’s break down what went right and what went wrong during the Monday night ceremony.

The Best Moments

Seth Meyers with Amy Poehler

Seth’s first presenter of the night was Beyoncé. Er… Poehler.

Julia and Bryan presenting together (then reuniting before she accepted her award)

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Bryan Cranston are two brilliant, funny actors. So it didn’t come as too big a surprise when the two paired up for a two-part bit. In the first, Cranston tried to remind Louis-Dreyfus that he once was on Seinfeld. In the second, Cranston’s passionate kissing skills reminded her that yes, he did appear on her beloved 90s sitcom.

Even the official Seinfeld Twitter account made a remark about it:

Billy on the Street

Comedian Billy Eichner brought his popular “Billy on the Street” web series to the Emmys with Meyers in tow, and the segment was pulled off brilliantly, making it one of the funniest moments during the show. We think Eichner is going to gain a bunch of new viewers thanks to this huge platform.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has now won the Best Lead Actress Emmy three years in a row for her role as Selina Meyer on Veep. She also won the Best Lead Actress award for The New Adventures of Old Christine in 2006. And, she won Best Supporting for Seinfeld in 1996. You go girl!

Seth Meyers with Andy Samberg

The Saturday Night Live duo reunited on stage for a brief moment to have some fun introducing Weird Al’s skit (more on that in a moment):

Gwen Stefani’s flub, and Jimmy Fallon accepting the award for Stephen Colbert

Source

An Adele Dazeem-like moment occurred when Gwen Stefani accidentally pronounced Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report as “The Colborg Report.” While her co-presenter Adam Levine was quick to correct her, the damage had already been done. You can bet that Colbert is going to be making fun of this moment during new episodes of The Colbert Report this week.

When Colbert took the stage, fellow late night comedy show host (and future network competitor) Jimmy Fallon took to the stage to accept the award on Colbert’s behalf. Colbert, meanwhile, was whispering things for Fallon to say in his ear. Watch:

‘Breaking Bad’s’ awards sweep

Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Bryan Cranston all won one more time for their roles as Jesse, Skylar, and Walter respectively. “To all the sneaky Petes of the world, settling for mediocrity, take a risk and fall in love all over again,” said Cranston during his acceptance speech.

Breaking Bad swept the drama categories including the coveted “Best Drama” award at the very end of the night. All who’ve watched the show agreed that it deserved everything it won, while those who haven’t watched it could be found making ignorant comments on Twitter.

Sara Barilles and Billy Crystal

Barilles performed a touching version of “Smile” to pay tribute to all of the people the entertainment industry lost over the last year. Then, the In Memoriam segment transitioned into a segment where Billy Crystal honored Robin Williams. His tribute was honest, funny, and made you think – it won everyone over and left us with tears in our eyes.

The Worst Moments

Jim Parsons wins AGAIN

FOURTH Emmy, SEVENTH nomination! To make matters worse, he’s getting paid ONE MILLION DOLLARS per episode of The Big Bang Theory now. He can afford to sit a year out. Although this was a bad moment, we did like how Meyers referenced his huge new payday.

Reality television awards

The Amazing Race won Best Reality Series for a tenth time. Should this category even be televised anymore? The category is stale. To make matters worse, showrunners acted like they were surprised.

The weird Q&A portion of the night

This was a comedy bit that started off weak but improved as it went along. One particular highlight was Good Wife alum Josh Charles handing over the bathroom key, Emmy attached, to Andre Braugher. Also, Melissa McCarthy turned on her signature humor to ask a question about parking. Watch:

Weird Al Yankovic creating new lyrics for TV show theme songs

Weird Al’s new TV theme songs didn’t go over well with anyone except Weird Al fans. But, there was a great moment when A Song of Ice and Fire series writer George R.R. Martin was handed a typewriter and encouraged to write “faster! faster!” Martin seemed into it, but we don’t think it did the trick. Watch:

And here’s Martin pretending to write the next Game of Thrones book:

Sofia Vergara on a platform

Source

The Academy put Modern Family actress Sofia Vergara on a spinning platform during the Television Academy President’s speech so that they could keep viewers tuned into the program while the boring remarks were made. The bit objectified Sofia and was the perfect example of something that should never be done on television. Thankfully, not too many in the audience were applauding the “bit,” though we have to wonder why Vergara agreed to it in the first place. She must know she’s better than this.

Or does she? Speaking in the media room afterward, Vergara responded to a question about the skit being sexist. “I think its absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself. I think it’s ridiculous that somebody started this — I know who she was — who has no sense of humor [and should] lighten up a little bit.”
