Just one day after the Gotham Awards were held, the 28th Annual Film Independent Spirit Awards are set with a particularly strong slate of nominees, led by Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook, and Ben Zeitlin’s Beast of the Southern Wild.

Topping the nominations was the Best Feature category, with Richard Linklater’s Bernie and Ira Sachs’ Keep the Lights On rounding out the list with the three aforementioned films. Anderson, Russell, Zeitlin, and Sachs were joined by The Loneliest Planet‘s Julia Loktev for the Best Director category. For Best First Feature Perks of Being a Wallflower, Safety Not Guaranteed, and Sound of My Voice were among the highlights.

In the acting categories, Silver Linings Playbook was a standout, earning Best Male Lead and Best Female Lead nominations for Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Looking ahead at the Oscars, the inclusion of Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Smashed and Matthew McConaughey for Magic Mike (who also picked up a nom in Best Male Lead for Killer Joe) will help their chances for nominations come Oscar time. It’s also nice to see Sam Rockwell get a nod for his manic, charismatic Seven Psychopaths performance.

Going down the list there are numerous other talented, experienced names who should bring some extra attention to the increasingly important awards show. The 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place Saturday, February 23 on IFC at 10pm.
