The Coen brothers’ Oscar-hopeful Inside Llewyn Davis was the winner at last night’s 2013 IFP Gotham Awards, upsetting favorite 12 Years a Slave in the Best Feature category.

While only handing out a select amount of awards, the independent cinema staple kicked off the awards season in style, as Inside Llewyn Davis trumped Steve McQueen’s slave epic 12 Years a Slave, Richard Linklater’s final installment in the relationship trilogy Before Midnight, David Lowery’s outlaw love story Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, and Shane Carruth’s bizarrely captivating allegory that is Upstream Color.

In other categories, Matthew McConaughey took home Best Actor honors for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, beating out fellow nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave, Oscar Isaac for Inside Llewyn Davis, Robert Redford for All Is Lost, and Isaiah Washington for Blue Caprice. Taking home Best Actress honors was Brie Larson for her terrific performance in Short Term 12, as she won over fellow nominees Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Scarlett Johansson for Don Jon, Amy Seimetz for Upstream Color, and Shailene Woodley for The Spectacular Now.

Oscar hopeful documentary The Act of Killing won in the Best Documentary category, while Fruitvale Station‘s Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordon won for Breakthrough Director and Breakthrough Actor, respectively.
