The 84th annual Academy Awards are just around the corner (this Sunday, to be exact), so it is high time that we share our own predictions on which films will strike Oscar gold come Sunday night. Take a look at the predictions from Hypable’s own Jeremy Baril and Jimmy Bean for the screenwriting categories after the jump!

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
“The Artist”
“Bridesmaids”
“Margin Call”
“Midnight in Paris”
“A Separation”

Jeremy:
Who Should Win: “Margin Call”
Who Will Win: “Midnight in Paris”

Jimmy:
Who Should Win: “Midnight in Paris”
Who Will Win: “Midnight in Paris”

Jeremy: “Midnight in Paris” is the clear front-runner for “Best Original Screenplay,” scooping up all the major screenplay awards, from the Critic’s Choice and Golden Globes, to most recently the WGA Award. I had had to pick, however, I’d go with “Margin Call.” The film is so small that it really doesn’t stand a chance up against the mighty Woody Allen, but that won’t stop me from heaping on props to first time writer and director J.C. Chandor, who managed to capture the 2008 stock market crash in a completely human, believable and dramatic fashion.

Jimmy: What can I say? I loved ‘Midnight In Paris’. It was a fable in the truest form that we’ve seen in years, and it was able to incorporate several cameos by well known authors throughout the years. I felt like I was getting to know the historical figures who’s works I had grown up reading, so watching Woody Allen’s hand-written love letter to Paris and writing itself was staggering to say the least. It had an excellent lesson to teach, and the way the screenplay was written made it easy for Owen Wilson to remind us all of a younger Woody Allen. That being said, wouldn’t it be fun to see ‘The Artist’ pick this one up?

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
“The Descendants”
“Hugo”
“The Ides of March”
“Moneyball”
“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”

Jeremy:
Who Should Win: “Moneyball”
Who Will Win: “The Descendants”

Jimmy:
Who Should Win: “The Ides of March”
Who Will Win: “Moneyball”

Jeremy: This race could actually become quite interesting, as “The Descendants” is definitely the favorite, but it’s Oscar stock is falling since it’s win at the Golden Globes. In fact, I could easily see one of the other films sneaking in to grab the screenplay category and “The Descendants” could end up going home from the Oscars empty handed. Of the five films nominated, “Moneyball” is easily the most impressive. Steve Zallian and Aaron Sorkin managed to take a rather dry, statistics based subject matter and turn it into a sweeping, powerful, and ultimately exciting historical drama.

Jimmy: Although “The Descendants” wowed critics and brought home the Golden Globe, I can’t say with complete honesty that its screenplay was what separated it from the pack. The screenplay to “Moneyball” was tightly written and able to successfully translate baseball jargon into a stunning personal drama. “Ides of March” was also able to do this, but instead of using baseball statistics, they chose instead to expose the underbelly of the political world. It took a massive understanding of the dark side of American politics to weave a story like this, and for the sheer storytelling ability I would prefer to see ‘Ides of March’ with the award, but Sorkin’s talent for dialogue is undeniable.
