Jeremy: We’re down to the big one, Best Picture. I’ve never seen the pundits so sure of an Oscar winner as has been the case here with “The Artist” and Best Picture, it is simply the case that “The Artist” is the type of film the Academy wants to go with this year. Do I think it’s deserved? No. “The Artist” is an “okay” movie masked as a classic by its gimmicks and a charming lead performance, although by now I’ve come to terms with it winning and will have to resort to the fact it’s not MY favorite movie. I loved “The Descendants,” I listed it as my number one movie of 2011, and while I’m not sure I still stand by that listing, compared with the rest of the Best Picture field, that would get my vote. Expect to see “The Artist” take the win tonight.

Jimmy: Before I go on, seeing “Midnight in Paris” upset the Best Picture category would make me happier than a seagull at a sourdough bread factory. I loved “The Artist,” and as far as quasi-gimmicky movies go, it deserves a place in the Best Picture hall of fame. It’s small moments like Valentin’s simple “I will make way for you” line and the charming (albeit manipulative) ending sequence that put the film into my top slot, but even those that hated the film (and there are plenty) will admit that the Academy is going to hand “The Artist” the top award. What happens when an art form slips into irrelevance? What happens to the artists? That’s a question that’s hitting the Academy particularly close to home, especially since audiences simply aren’t digging the movies that film snobs like myself treasure. Besides, did you really think the Academy would pass up the chance to vote for a film titled “The Artist”?
