The 84th annual Academy Awards are just around the corner (this Sunday, to be exact), so it is high time that we share our own predictions on which films will strike Oscar gold come Sunday night. Take a look at the predictions from Hypable’s own Jeremy Baril and Jimmy Bean for the best directing category after the jump!

BEST DIRECTOR
Michel Hazanavicius “The Artist”
Alexander Payne “The Descendants”
Martin Scorsese “Hugo”
Woody Allen “Midnight in Paris”
Terrence Malick “The Tree of Life”

Jeremy:
Who Should Win: Martin Scorsese “Hugo”
Who Will Win: Michel Hazanavicius “The Artist”

Jimmy:
Who Should Win: Woody Allen “Midnight In Paris”
Who Will Win: Michel Hazanavicius “The Artist”

Jeremy: This is one of the strongest categories, in my book. While Hazanavicius and “The Artist” are simply too powerful right now to discount, there is definitely some steep competition from the rest of the field in terms of talent. I could easily make a case for each director winning this year, particularly Martin Scorsese, who infused such awe and life into the surroundings in “Hugo” to discount, although all have clearly earned their nomination. Expect to see Hazanavicius take this award, with a possible upset by the beloved Scorsese.

Jimmy: As Jeremy pointed out, “The Artist” and Michel Hazanavicius are pretty unstoppable at this point. The ressurection of an all but dead art form was a magnificent feat, and it was executed with enough charm to seem like more than just a gimmick. Would I like to see Allen walk away with the award for simply out-charming “The Artist” at its own time-travelling game? Yes, but don’t be surprised to see Scorcese fight tooth and nail to win this nostalgia fest. It might be safe to expect that the Malick household will be unusually quiet on Sunday night.
