The Netflix series 13 Reasons Why is based on a self-contained novel, but author Jay Asher wants a second season to continue the story.

At this point you’ve either seen or heard about 13 Reasons Why, the 13-episode Netflix series exploring why a high school girl chose to kill herself.

Based on a book of the same name, the series follows main character Clay (Dylan Minnette) as he listens to the 13 tapes Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) left behind, painting the tragic picture of how a compilation of big and small traumas can make life feel unbearable.

Once all 13 tapes have been listened to and the story of Hannah’s suicide has been recounted, the novel ends, and so does the Netflix series. But of course we still don’t know what happens to all the characters we’ve gotten to know over the course of those 13 episodes.

The cast and crew are in favor of a second season, and believe the fans would be, too. But what about the author of the novel, Jay Asher?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Asher says he’s actually interested in seeing the story continue past his novel, because, “I’d just like a continuation of all those characters. I’m curious as well.”

Asher even offers some specific questions he’d like a second season to answer: “What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What’s going to happen to Mr. Porter?”

He also admits that he had considered doing a sequel himself, but ultimately decided against it. “There’s never going to be a sequel,” he says. “[But] you can explore that world further in a different medium, and the book will still be able to be itself. I don’t think the show is affecting what the book is saying.”
