The arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy has allowed us to recall movies from one of our favorite genres: the space opera.
The space opera genre has been given a lot of different definitions, and there’s no definitive answer to what a space opera is. One thing that’s for sure is that it obviously has to at least partially take place in space, but beyond that the definition is a little open. Usually space operas embrace melodrama, and for the sake of our list, we’re saying that they don’t take themselves too seriously either. This of course knocks a few potential candidates off the list, but it allows us to get to movies closer in tone to Guardians of the Galaxy.
