In honor of Valentine’s Day, we thought it only appropriate to take a look at our 10 favorite love song moments of the last 5 seasons of The Vampire Diaries.

If there’s one thing that The Vampire Diaries does absolutely right, it’s their soundtrack. The show has done a masterful job of pairing both popular and unknown artists with powerful performances from its amazing cast, to give us some of the most memorable love song moments of recent television memory.

Whether you consider yourself more of a Delena or a Stelena shipper, the romantic entanglements of The Vampire Diaries have been one of its most defining features. Throughout its 5 years on the CW (soon to be 6 as it was just renewed yesterday!), romance has been a constant reminder that no matter what these characters’ roles may be in the supernatural world, love will always prevail. And with each great romance has come great music to accompany their most important scenes.

With no further ado, here are our 10 favorite lovey-dovey musical moments from the first 5 seasons of The Vampire Diaries:

Season 1

‘Gravity’ by Sara Bareilles from episode 2: ‘Night of the Comet’

The most classic of classic Stelena moments is definitely that of their first kiss, accompanied most effectively by Sara Bareilles’ “Gravity”. It is such a memorable song for the pairing that it was re-used in Season 5 when Elena takes amnesiac Stefan down to Wickery Bridge to try and coax his memories back. Not only is it the perfect song for Stelena, it is also a beautiful melody to accompany their most charged moments.

‘This is Beautiful’ by Tyrone Wells from episode 10: ‘The Turning Point’

The end of this scene disrupts the beautiful romance of the song as Stefan and Elena bask in the intimacy of their after-sex closeness, but until Elena discovers the photo of Katherine on the table, the melodic tones of Tyrone Wells’ “This is Beautiful” draw you into their contentedness and make you want this moment to last forever.

Season 2

‘I Was Wrong’ by Sleeperstar from episode 8: ‘Rose’

Any fan of Delena has this moment cemented in their memory, and while the song heard beneath it may not be the first thing they think of, it most certainly plays the mood exactly right. Damon and Elena have towed a long road from adversaries, to friends, to lovers, and most recently, to exes. In this scene, one that Elena does not remember until after she turns at the beginning of season 4, “I Was Wrong” by Sleeperstar sets the mood just right for the beginning of a beautiful ride.

‘Eternal Flame (Bangles Cover)’ by S.O. Stereo ft. Candice Accola from episode 16:’The House Guest’

This scene is particularly special, as it’s the only moment on the list in which the music is not just soundtrack, but live and in the DNA of the scene. Sung most incredibly by our very own Caroline Forbes, this public declaration of her feelings for Matt also brings with it a touching bit of Alaric and Jenna attraction as well. What a lovely look back on a few short lived couples in The Vampire Diaries canon.

Season 3

‘A Drop in the Ocean’ by Ron Pope from episode 1: ‘The Birthday’

While the song plays over a myriad of scenes at the end of season 3’s premiere episode, “The Birthday,” there are two in particular that stand out most strongly. First of all, Caroline and Tyler’s first foray into couple-dom is certainly noteworthy, as they will go on to endure the hardest of roads over the next 2 seasons. But the moment that makes this song so incredibly remarkable is the connection between Elena and Stefan. With no words spoken on his part at all, and many miles in between them, you can feel the love emanating through the air as the lyrics, “I’m wishing for rain as I stand in the desert,” do a perfect job of illustrating what exactly Stefan is looking for in this moment.

‘Holding On and Letting Go’ by Ross Copperman from episode 10: ‘The New Deal’

In perhaps the most anticipated moment of the first 3 seasons for Delena fans, “Holding on and Letting Go” by Ross Copperman does a particularly superb job of illustrating exactly what is going on with these characters here. In a moment where both are holding on and letting go of the past in equal measure, it is the following lyrics that paint the picture most astutely, “It’s everything you wanted, it’s everything you don’t, it’s one door swinging open, one door swinging closed.”

Season 4

‘Kiss Me’ by Ed Sheeran from episode 7: ‘My Brother’s Keeper’

While any Ed Sheeran song can turn an ordinary scene into one to remember, “Kiss Me” does double duty here. It manages to turn the on-screen makeout session into something more as Caroline and Stefan put the final piece in the puzzle that is Elena’s recent behavior with one word, sired. The sirebond between Damon and Elena added a wrinkle to their relationship throughout season 4, and the viewers got their first look at the then tainted love of Delena.

‘Belong’ by Cary Brothers from episode 23: ‘Graduation’

Another stop on the roller coaster that has been the Delena romance, the Cary Brothers song “Belong” guides our two lovebirds toward the life-altering L-word. As Damon reiterates his familiar feelings of being completely wrong for Elena, the Cary Brothers seem to speak for him: “You’re wrong. I don’t belong to you. What I’d give for that first night when you were mine. Tried with all that I have to keep you alive.” Elena disagrees and says the words Damon has always wanted to hear.

Season 5

‘Don’t Deserve You’ by Plumb from episode 2: ‘True Lies’

Only halfway through season 5 and already we’ve seen Delena dismantle before our eyes, but before it did, we were reminded of just how lovely it is when two people are content and happy. This song serves us Damon’s thoughts on a platter as the lyrics declare, “And you’re quick to forgive when I make a mistake. You love me in the blink of an eye. I don’t deserve your love, but you give it to me anyway.”

‘Illusory Light’ by Sarah Blasko from episode 11: ‘500 Years of Solitude’

Last, but most certainly never least, we have the last minutes of Miss Katherine Pierce’s life with the man she repeatedly chose, giving her peace with which to leave this Earth. Stefan and Katherine have had a long history between them, and no matter what may have happened following this lovely moment, it doesn’t marr the scene painted here.
