Hairspray‘s very own Tracy Turnblad, Nikki Blonsky, has landed a recurring role in the second season of Smash.

Actor Wes Taylor, who plays ensemble member Bobby, tweeted a picture of Blonsky on the set of the NBC musical drama Monday, and The Hollywood Reporter has since confirmed the casting.

No details have been released about Blonsky’s character, except for that the actress won’t be playing herself. Other than Hairspray, Blonsky also starred in the short-lived 2010 ABC Family series Huge.

She joins the growing cast of Smash, which now also includes Rent‘s Jesse L. Martin and Grey’s Anatomy‘s Daniel Sunjata in recurring roles, Jennifer Hudson and Will and Grace‘s Sean Hayes in guest roles, as well as new series regulars Jeremy Jordan (Newsies), Krysta Rodriguez (The Addams Family) and Andy Mientus (touring company of Spring Awakening).

Following the season 1 finale, NBC announced that four characters – Dev (Raza Jaffrey), Ellis (Jaime Cepero), Michael Swift (Will Chase) and Frank (Brian d’Arcy James) – would not be returning as regulars in the upcoming season.

Smash returns at midseason. What do you think of the casting of Nikki Blonsky? Who do you think she’ll play?
