The Power Rangers are on their way back, and the release date news arrives just days after fellow ’90s alums Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles won the weekend box office.

Lionsgate announced this afternoon that Power Rangers will be released July 22, 2016.

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class, Thor) are writing the script while Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 are producing.

A general synopsis for Power Rangers reminds you of why you loved them in the ’90s: “From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.”

It’s probably not a coincidence that Lionsgate decided to set a date for their Power Rangers film so soon after Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made $65.5 in its opening weekend. The film was expected to not handily defeat the much-better-reviewed Guardians of the Galaxy’s second weekend but defeated it ($42.1 million) easily. There’s a thirst for fandoms from the ’90s, and Power Rangers will feed it. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel will, too.

Power Rangers – which is expected to be a reboot – joins a busy July 2016 film slate: Angry Birds (July 1), The BFG (July 1), Independence Day 2 (July 1), Doctor Strange (July 8), a new Jason Bourne movie (July 15), and Planet of the Apes 3 (July 29).
