Actor Liev Schreiber has been cast in the enigmatic role of Colonel Vosch in the film adaptation of Rick Yancey’s The 5th Wave.

Acclaimed actor Liev Schreiber is reportedly the first actor to fill a major adult role in The 5th Wave film adaptation. Schreiber, it was announced today, has been cast as the commanding Colonel Vosch.

As the consummate military man with an army base full of secrets, Colonel Vosch plays a significant role in the latter half of The 5th Wave. The character’s interactions with protagonist Cassie (to be played by Chloe Moretz, most recently of If I Stay) are brief, but powerful, and Vosch is a crucial part of the transformation of Cassie’s crush Ben Parish (Nick Robinson) into the alien-slaying badass nicknamed “Zombie.”

The role of Colonel Vosch seems to be an excellent fit for Schreiber, who is currently starring in the Showtime series Ray Donovan. Schreiber excels at portraying powerful characters who are simultaneously trustworthy and terrifying, which suits the Colonel – and his mysterious goals – perfectly.

In other casting news, actress Maika Monroe has recently been announced in the role of Ringer. A brutal, enigmatic young woman who becomes Ben’s companion under Vosch’s command, Ringer is known for her ruthlessness in killing suspected aliens, but her own past remains a mystery. Monroe is a relative unknown, though she appeared with Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin in last year’s film Labor Day.

Filling out the current cast of The 5th Wave film adaptation is Alex Roe as the mysterious Evan Walker. Susannah Grant is adapting the script from Rick Yancey’s novel, and J Blakeson is directing.

The second book in The 5th Wave trilogy, The Infinite Sea, will be released on Sept. 16.

The 5th Wave film will hit theaters in Jan. 2016.
