Cassandra Clare has announced the name of her fourth Shadowhunter series: The Last Hours.

The Last Hours series will consist of three books: Chain of Thorns, Chain of Gold, and Chain of Iron. All of these titles are taken from Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations, which the story will be based on.

The story will be set in 1903 in London, at a liminal time between the Victorian and Edwardian eras. It will focus on the children of the characters from Clare’s prequel trilogy, The Infernal Devices. The Last Hours series is therefore a sequel series to a prequel… We don’t even know what kind of –quel that makes it!

The rights to publish the series in the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand were acquired by Walker Books for a six-figure sum, which only the top tier of authors can command.

The Shadowhunters all began with The Mortal Instruments, the sixth and final book of which will be released May 27. The spinoff about Magnus Bane, the Magnus Bane Chronicles, will come out as a physical book in November or December.

Next on Clare’s plate is a sequel series to The Mortal Instruments, titled The Dark Artifices. Clare said that this sequel trilogy and the sequel-to-the-prequel trilogy will be interconnected despite the century difference in time. They will both be “the stories of the Blackthorns, Herondales, and Carstairs.”

The Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices were published concurrently, and Clare is still figuring out the order of publication. The first Dark Artifices book, Lady Midnight, is due to be published in 2015. Walker Books apparently plans to publish the first Last Hours book in 2017. However it pans out, these Shadowhunter books will not be coming out until 2019 at least. Clare has said she intends to do a fifth series after that.
