A trailer for a short film based on the Beedle the Bard story “The Tale of the Three Brothers” has been released online.

Update: The film’s key grip Spencer Roberts tell us that the film will be released online in the future, and it was only Warner Bros. who gave permission for the project to move forward. A previous version of this report noted that Rowling had approved it too, according to The Star.

Interestingly, this student/fan project was developed at the permission of Harry Potter movie studio Warner Bros, according to a new report.

“The Tale of the Three Brothers” was created at the New England School of Communications, a college in Bangor, Maine. The first screening will take place in early May.

The original report at The Star notes that the general public will probably never see the film, but they don’t explain why. If we were to guess, we assume that Rowling and Warner Bros. did not give the school permission to distribute the film broadly, which would mean making a profit off of their trademarks.

Although the masses won’t be able to see the film, it’s interesting that Rowling and Warner Bros. gave their blessing. As far as we know, it’s rare for the two owners of the Potter franchise to approve of such things.

TheStar.com says that the school produced and won an award for their adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Last Rung on the Ladder,” which could be why Rowling and WB were willing to approve the project.

Numerous fan projects have surfaced on YouTube over the years, including this short film looking at the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Rowling and Warner Bros. are currently working on an adaptation of Fantatic Beasts and Where to Find Them. We learned in late March that the book will be turned into a trilogy.
