Fans are well aware now that The Avengers Phase One collector’s edition was delayed due to a lawsuit. Amazon is now giving fans a free copy of The Avengers to those who had already pre-ordered the collector’s edition.

If you were one of the many fans who pre-ordered the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One Avengers Assembled Collection that is no longer available, Amazon is now offering a free copy of The Avengers DVD/Blu-ray, which will be available September 25. We had assumed Amazon and many other online retailers would be contacting the fans who had already pre-ordered the now delayed collector’s edition and sure enough some companies are attempting to please their customers. Amazon has released an official statement, concerning the collector’s edition seen below that was delayed until spring 2013:

We’re writing to let you know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One-Avengers Assembled Collection will not be released by Marvel as originally expected. Instead, Marvel is planning to offer a similar collection in new packaging. The new collection will include the original titles offered with the first version of the item, and is expected to be available in the spring of 2013. To make this easy for you, we updated your order for the original collection and will ship the new collection when it becomes available. The price of the new collection will be the same as the original collection.

To show our appreciation for your understanding, we are providing you with a promo code to receive a free copy of Marvel’s The Avengers (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo in Blu-ray Packaging). To be eligible, you must have placed your order between June 1, 2012 and August 28, 2012. Any cancelled orders are not eligible to receive the free copy. Codes must be redeemed by October 15, 2012.

We’re very happy to see that Amazon is looking out for its customers, but you’ll notice the part in bold states if you canceled your pre-order, you cannot receive the free copy of The Avengers. As many die-hard Avengers fans were probably keeping up with the news that the collector’s edition was delayed, they most likely canceled their pre-order to prevent any sort of mix-up.

For once it might have payed not to stay informed, as it looks like you’ll be missing out on your free copy of the film if you canceled your pre-order before they released this statement. We do commend Amazon for stepping up and looking out for its customers, as this is the first online retailer that we’ve seen make any sort of gesture.

Did you pre-order the Phase One Avengers Assembled Collection?

If so, will you be receiving your free promo code for The Avengers DVD/Blu-ray? Make sure to claim your free copy before October 15, as that is the cutoff date for all promo codes.
