The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after-credits scene will feature a clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past. Could this mean a crossover between the Marvel characters is possible?

Update: “Variety has learned that “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb had an existing contract with Fox Searchlight to helm another film following 2009′s “500 (Days) of Summer.” After “The Amazing Spider-Man” in 2012, Webb’s negotiations briefly stalled with Sony as he was caught in a tug-of-war with Fox. Eventually, Fox agreed to allow Webb to direct Sony’s “Spider-Man” sequel, but only if Sony would promote its “X-Men” film for free.”

Essentially Marc Webb’s contract forced Sony to promote X-Men: Days of Future Past since he had a previous contract to direct another film for Fox back in 2009 after he directed 500 Days of Summer. It’s still very uncommon to see competing studios do something like this and even more uncommon to see them promote a film during an after-credits scene.

While it’s certainly not as exciting as a possible future Marvel crossover, it’s still exciting to see an exclusive X-Men: Days of Future Past clip attached to The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

It’s been announced that during The Amazing Spider-Man 2 after-credits scene, audiences will be greeted with a clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past. This is incredibly exciting considering this could be the first time two different studios have worked together with their different Marvel characters.

Sony owns Spider-Man’s rights, while Fox owns all of the X-Men characters. In the comic universe Spider-Man does have storylines which involved mutants, but this is a very interesting move for both studios.

Fans have been wanting Sony and Disney/Marvel to work together forever, especially after The Avengers was such a smash hit. Spider-Man is an essential part of The Avengers but due to the fact that Sony owns the character rights there’s never been even the slightest chance that he could appear in an Avengers film.

It looks as though Sony and Fox are trying to team up and share their audiences with one another. This could be a sign for their future plans and the possibility for Spider-Man to team up with some other superheroes or it could simply mean they’re advertising for one another.

Empire has revealed that a scene from X-Men: Days of Future Past which includes Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, Lucas Till’s Havok and Evan Jonigkeit’s Toad will be included after the credits of Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

We do know that Sony has huge plans for their Spider-Man villains, with Sinister Six and Venom already having directors and writers in place for their respective films.

We’ll have to see how this unfolds, but right now it looks like we may be in for some surprising moves from the two studios which wouldn’t have anything to do with each other for quite a while.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will hit theaters on May 2, so be sure to stick around after the film ends to see Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique in the film’s after-credits scene promoting X-Men: Days of Future Past, which hits theaters May 23.
