Wonder Woman is not an island, even if she grew up on one. A new image reveals the look of the Amazons who raised and trained the superhero.
Wonder Woman grew up on Themyscira, surrounded by female warriors who shunned the mortal world, the world of men, and lived in peace, honing their skills. Three of those warriors can be seen in the image below from next year’s Wonder Woman film.
EW has the scoop on the warriors pictured, which include Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), Antiope (Robin Wright), and Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli).
Hippolyta is queen of the Amazons and mother to Wonder Woman. She wants to protect her daughter from the outside world, while General Antiope, the queen’s sister, wants to prepare her for what’s to come. Menalippe, Antiope’s lieutenant, also trains Wonder Woman.
The look of all four warriors will be closely scrutinized by fans and detractors alike, but Director Patty Jenkins has her reasons for depicting them the way we see above.
“To me, they shouldn’t be dressed in armor like men,” she explains to EW. “It should be different. It should be authentic and real—and appealing to women.”
The costume designer, Lindy Hemming, took care in making the armor practical while also showing off the women’s battle-hardened bodies.
“It’s total wish-fulfillment,” Jenkins explains further. “I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight badass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”
Either way, this movie has been a long time coming, and if initial reactions to her part in Batman v Superman are anything to go by, her solo film is going to kick ass.
Wonder Woman will hit cinemas on June 23, 2017.
