New streaming service Quibi has acquired This Joka, a stand-up comedy series that’s hosted and executive produced by Will Smith.
In This Joka, Will Smith will invite a diverse lineup of up-and-coming, established, and legendary comedians to explore the nature of comedy and its unique ability to bring people together.
The show will be shot on location at Topgolf and other popular venues across Las Vegas, and will showcase stand-up sets, as well as one-on-one conversations between Will Smith and the comedians, intimate interviews, and docu-style moments backstage and around the city.
“Will’s love and respect for stand-up comedy runs deep, and with this series on Quibi, we hope to discover, learn from, and uplift the next generation of diverse comedic talent,” said Terence Carter, Co-President Westbrook Studios. “The goal of This Joka isn’t just to laugh, but to find the universal human truths behind the laughter.”
This Joka will feature Will Smith interviewing comics such as Baron Vaughn, Megan Gailey, Punkie Johnson, Sean Patton, Rosebud Baker, Shane Torres, Clayton English, Christi Chiello, Vanessa Gonzalez, Martin Urbano, Sam Tallent, David Gborie, Jackie Fabulous, Chris Estraded, Rell Battle, and Daphnique Springs.
The show will also include special appearances by George Wallace, Demi Adejuyigbe, and Shawn Wasabi, and will be directed by Lance Bangs.
This Joka comes from from Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Westbrook Studios, as well as Topgolf Entertainment Group. In addition to Will Smith, executive producers include Miguel Melendez, Terence Carter, Brad Haugen, Lukas Kaiser, Erik Anderson, Chad Nelson, and YuChiang Cheng.
Quibi will launch on April 6, 2020, though it’s currently unknown if the Will Smith hosted show will be available at its debut.
Quibi — which is short for Quick Bites — is set to feature series and films that run two to four hours in length and are broken down into parts that are no longer than 10 minutes. The chapters will be released everyday until the film or series is complete.
Quibi will have two different cost structures. $4.99 per month with ads, and $7.99 with no ads. Currently, the new streamer is offering a limited time 90-day free trial offer for those who sign up prior to April 30.
