Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell will reunite for the first time since Anchorman 2 in the upcoming series The Shrink Next Door, which will debut on Apple TV Plus.
The show was first announced earlier this year in February, but was not yet attached to a streaming service or network.
However, Variety reports that Apple TV Plus has acquired the Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd comedy series after a competitive bidding process that was conducted entirely online due to precautions about the coronavirus.
The Shrink Next Door will reunite the comedy duo of Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd, who were first cast together in the now iconic comedy film Anchorman, which debuted 16 years ago. The two last appeared together on screen in the follow-up to that film, which was released in 2013.
The upcoming TV series, The Shrink Next Door, will be based on the the popular podcast of the same name — which in turn is inspired by true events.
The show is described as a dark comedy that centers on the the bizarre relationship between psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf, played by Paul Rudd, and his longtime patient, Martin “Marty” Markowitz, played by Will Ferrell.
The series will follow the two as Paul Rudd’s Dr. Isaac Herschkopf begins to take over Will Ferrell’s Marty’s life in increasingly intrusive ways, such as moving into Marty’s home and taking over his family business until their relationship devolves into one filled with manipulation, power grabs, and complete dysfunction.
In addition to leading the series, Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd will likewise act as executive producers for the project.
The Big Sick and Hello, My Name Is Doris director Michael Showalter — who recently worked with Paul Rudd in Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later — is set to be the director of the series. It will likewise have Veep and Succession scribe Georgia Pritchett working behind the scenes.
