A movie adaptation of the Wicked musical is finally happening! The movie will hit theaters December 2021, Universal announced today.
If you’re feeling déjà vu, it’s not unwarranted: The studio has previously announced 2016 and 2019 release dates for the Wicked movie — the latter of which also had Daldry attached.
The Wicked movie is still set to be directed by Daldry, who’s best known for directing Billy Elliot. He also directed The Reader and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. He’s been attached to the project since 2012, but the film has faced several production delays.
Universal also announced today that the movie will be produced by Marc Platt (Into the Woods). He’ll be joined by Winnie Holzman (who adapted the book for stage) and Wicked mastermind Stephen Schwarz (Godspell, Pippin), who are working on the screenplay.
The news comes the same day the theatrical production released a 15th Anniversary edition of the score’s music, with a new version of “For Good,” and covers by Pentatonix, Ariana Grande, and Adam Lambert.
Today’s release date news means Universal — once again — has an apparently firm plan in place to get this thing filmed. And now, let the casting begin!
Wicked launched in San Francisco in 1998 before opening on Broadway with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth in 2003. It went on to receive three Tonys and is currently the 10th longest-running Broadway show. In March it hit $1 billion on Broadway, making it only the third show to do so (The Lion King and Phantom of the Opera are the other two).
The Tom Holland-led Spider-Man series will continue on, but not with Disney or Marvel’s Kevin Feige.
