Damon Lindelof and HBO’s Watchmen has officially been ordered to series at the network.
As was first reported in summer 2017, Lindelof’s Watchmen series has been in development for over a year. HBO greenlit a pilot, shortly after the news broke, with a stellar cast, including Jeremy Irons, signed on to star. HBO is seemingly confident enough in Lindelof’s vision for the adaptation that the network has now ordered it to series.
HBO’s synopsis for the series reads, “Watchmen embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel while attempting to break new ground of its own.”
That synopsis echoes a letter penned by Lindelof in May, which stated that he had no desire to make a direct adaptation of the Watchmen source material. “Those issues are sacred ground and will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted,” he wrote.
However, the show will not serve as a direct sequel to Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ now cult classic.
“This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built… but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original,” Lindelof said. “It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates. It must ask new questions and explore the world through a fresh lens. Most importantly, it must be contemporary.”
Lindelof will see his strong vision for the series come to fruition, as he is both writing and executive producing the project. Nicole Kassell is slated to direct the pilot, and will also executive produce. Other executive producers include Stephen Williams, who is set to direct as well, Joseph Iberti and Tom Spezialy.
The full cast includes Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, Lily Rose Smith, and Adelynn Spoon. No characters have yet been confirmed, with Lindelof saying, “Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them.”
There is a current projected release date for HBO’s Watchmen series of 2019.
