HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s newly announced streaming platform, will be the exclusive home for many of your old faves and a few shows that are likely to be your new obsession.
In the battle for dominance in the streaming world, Netflix is gradually losing its high ground.
The streaming giant has slowly been hemorrhaging its biggest legacy shows, with The Office leaving the site to set up shop in NBC’s new streaming site and now with powerhouse show Friends leaving in 2020 for its new home on WarnerMedia’s streaming site, HBO Max.
While WarnerMedia has teased its streaming site for some time, today is the first time we’ve heard definitive information on both its name and the content which will be available there.
The streaming site is said to premiere with 10,000 hours of premium content, which includes not only original content from some big names, but also shows and features from its vast array of brands and digital libraries — HBO, New Line, DC Entertainment, CNN, TNT, TBS, truTV, The CW, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, and Looney Tunes.

In terms of fan favorite shows, some highlights for the streaming site are that HBO Max will have the exclusive streaming rights for Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Pretty Little Liars, and will be the exclusive streaming home for the upcoming CW TV shows, Batwoman and Katy Keene — a spinoff of Riverdale.
HBO Max also has two exclusive production deals — one with Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, who will produce four YA-focused films, and another with Reese Witherspoon, whose production company will produce at least two films.
That’s not the end of the original content, as HBO Max will also have — among many others — the previously announced Dune: The Sisterhood adaptation from director Denis Villenueve, a romantic comedy series with Anna Kendrick and produced by Paul Feig, and Joss Whedon’s new science fiction series, The Nevers.
For the full list of Max Original series, check out the official press release from Warner Media, which lists some more pretty big names like Julian Fellowes, J.J. Abrams, Mark Ruffalo and Winona Ryder.
According to WarnerMedia, a beta version of HBO Max will be available towards the end of 2019, with the complete version available in Spring 2020.
