The Uncharted movie seemed like it had legs when it was reported that Tom Holland was still set to star as the film’s protagonist. Now, it has been announced that former director Shawn Levy has left the project.
The first positive news we’ve heard in a while about the upcoming Uncharted movie came back in August when Levy talked about the development of the film. “I mean, as of right now, the closest to the starting line is Uncharted in that it’s a massive title. We now have a very good script and we have our star in Tom Holland,” said Levy.
Levy then went on to say that “as of right now, [Uncharted] seems to be the most near horizon. And it’s a movie I’m very excited about.” Despite that excitement, the Stranger Things director has since moved on to a different project called Free Guy, set to start filming in April.
Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as a video game character determined to save his home by preventing the game developers from shutting down the game’s servers (a struggle many MMO players can relate to). Free Guy is under 20th Century Fox, leaving Sony out a fourth director in a row for the Uncharted movie. This news does not bode well for the project, and may even cease all production on the Uncharted movie for some time.
What will become of the Uncharted movie will rely on the turnaround Sony is able to achieve; that is, if they are even to hire another director for the film, studio execs would likely expect the project to move forward quickly so as to avoid any more production hiccups.
In the meantime, we have The Last of Us Part II to look forward to, and perhaps a new Uncharted game coming down the pipeline a little while after. Levy’s Stranger Things season 3 will debut on Netflix sometime in 2019.
