From the very first episode, Tyrion has stood out as one of the show’s most likeable characters. He may be a Lannister by blood, but he’s more a man of the people than anyone else on Game of Thrones.
Tyrion’s advice to Jon Snow in the pilot episode set the stage for his role on Game of Thrones better than just about any explanation I could try to come up with.
Tyrion: “Let me tell you something, bastard. Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor and it can never be used to hurt you.
Jon Snow: “What the hell do you know about being a bastard?”
Tyrion: “All dwarfs are bastards in their father’s eyes.”
That one phrase best symbolizes Tyrion’s role as well as his perceived role in the world. Because of his stature, he has been overlooked and undervalued. Underestimated at every turn. It is this that has allowed Tyrion to grow into one of the most well suited men for the throne that Westeros has ever seen. There are a million reasons why the youngest of the Lannister brood should sit the Iron Throne, especially when you consider all he has seen and heard.
Tyrion has one of the best minds this show has ever seen
Growing up the infamous Lannister “Imp” (as he is first named in the pilot), Tyrion has spent many days and nights reading any and everything that he can get his hands on. He has read the histories of Westeros and knows more of the wars that created his country than even those who fought them. He knows the legends and lore of every superstition and people in the known world, and has used that knowledge to his advantage in many ways.
In addition to his reading, Tyrion has seen more that anyone in his family. He has traveled far and wide, from the Wall to the southern borders and back again, stretching east and west into the foreign lands and has worked his way into the good graces and chief advisory role for Daenerys Targaryen as she leads her campaign for the throne.
There is a reason he has survived no matter whom he has gone up against. His father, his sister, his nephew, and just about every curious stare he’s drawn over his lifetime has seen him and thought they had his measure. That because he is a highborn dwarf, he is simply lucky not to have been killed after taking his first breath outside the womb. But the credit for his survival belongs to Tyrion alone. Him and his marvelous mind.
Tyrion is a survivor
He survived infancy and what must have been a terrible childhood. He survived life in the castles of King’s Landing. He has survived battles and wars and being marked for death after a farce of a trial indicting him for the murder of his nephew.
That spirit, that never give up, never surrender spirit will do him well on the Iron Throne. Tyrion will have a number of hurdles to clear even after he wins the right to rule the lands of Westeros. He will have to do battle with doubters and naysayers that will always believe him lesser than, but he is the fiercest spirit the Iron Throne would ever know.
Tyrion, as Daenerys’ Hand, has a path to the throne should anything happen to the Mother of Dragons. With soldiers aplenty to fight wars, the person who sits the throne will need a head full of ideas and wisdom to lead, as well as the will to hold onto the throne with both hands.
Tyrion has loved and lost — and learned to love again
When you find a man with the wisdom to lead a country and the heart to survive it, it’s important to know what kind of ruler he would be. As a man of many loves, Tyrion Lannister knows mercy, hope, affection, and kindness in spades. He’s loved and lost and loved again. He will show kindness when appropriate and treat the people as his own.
It’s equally important to know that he’s willing to do what is necessary and just. The blows he delivered to Joffrey in the pilot prove that he knows how and when to use force to teach. The death blows he delivered to his father prove that he has the guts to do what is necessary.
He has watched the best and worst of generations win and lose the throne. He’s absorbed all that knowledge and all that experience. He is beyond qualified and ready to lead Westeros through the winter that has finally arrived.
