Looks like everyone’s favorite weather disaster movie Twister is the next thing from the 90’s to get the reboot treatment!
According to Variety, who first reported the news, Universal Pictures already has a director in mind for the Twister and is reportedly in negotiations with Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski to helm the picture.
If Kosinski gets the job, it will be his third big budget reboot/remake of a blockbuster favorite movie. In addition to directing the Tom Cruise-led reboot Top Gun: Maverick, Kosinski made his breakthrough directing debut on Tron: Legacy, which was the Jeff Bridges and Garrett Hedlund-led sequel to the 1982 film Tron.
There are currently no actors and no writers attached to the reboot of Twister, though Variety reports that Universal Pictures is meeting with writers for the film. Frank Marshall is currently set to produce.
As the reboot pic is still in its early stages, there are no details on the story.
The original Twister film was a massive hit despite it’s mediocre reviews from critics, making $494 million at the worldwide box office against an estimated $92 million budget.
The iconic weather disaster film starred Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt, Jami Gertz and Cary Elwes as storm chasers, with Paxton and Hunt playing a couple teetering on the edge of divorce.
In order to use their advance weather alert system that must be placed directly in the path of a tornado, the two would-be exes decide to team up to chase tornadoes.
In addition to becoming a worldwide blockbuster hit, Twister was also applauded for its ground-breaking special effects.
The original film was helmed by Speed director Jan De Boot, with Jurassic Park and Westworld writer Michael Crichton penning the script and iconic director Steven Spielberg executive producing the film.
