Good news and… good news? Disney and Pixar have decided to flip the Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2 release dates.
First, the unequivocally good news: The Incredibles 2 is arriving one year earlier than expected. The movie will now hit theaters June 15, 2018.
This was the date previously held by Toy Story 4, which will find Buzz and Woody on a mission to find Bo Peep, the cowboy’s love. The fourth installment in the beloved series will now hit theaters June 21, 2019. It’s directed by John Lasseter, who directed the first two Toy Story installments.
The official reason for the release date switch is unknown. I see this as a good move, since fans are skeptical about Toy Story 4. With an extra year to develop the movie, the studio has plenty of time to make sure the story is perfect, and that it’s a worthy follow-up to the amazing Toy Story 3.
In that same vein of pleasing audiences, moviegoers have been clamoring for an Incredibles sequel for years. Now we’re getting it a year earlier than expected. Perfect!
What’s the Incredibles 2 plot? We don’t know. “It’ll be more Incredibles. I’m not going to give up anything! I come down on the side of surprise,” director Brad Bird said in a new statement.
Meanwhile, Cars 3 is set for a June 16, 2017 release, and Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich’s Coco will open November 22, 2017. The latter is the only non-sequel currently on Pixar’s release calendar.
Notably, this is the second time Toy Story 4 has been delayed. It was originally slated for June 2017, the date now occupied by the Cars threequel.
