Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley biopic has found its latest star in none other than Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Update (2/7/2020): According to Deadline, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal has officially joined the cast of director Baz Luhrmann’s next film.
The forthcoming biopic, focuses on Elvis Presley’s relationship with manger Colonel Tom Parker. The film is set to use the pair’s complicated relationship as a vehicle with which to tell the story of the music icon’s life and music.
Specifically, Gyllenhaal is set to play Elvis’ mother in the film. She’ll be acting opposite Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood’s Austin Butler, who beat out Miles Teller, Harry Styles and Ansel Elgort fo the role of Elvis himself just last summer.
Others who’ve joined the cast of the Luhrmann led film include Australian actress Olivia DeJonge, who scored the coveted role of Priscilla Presley in October 2019.
In addition, 2020 Oscars nominee Tom Hanks is also signed on to star in the forthcoming film which is set to be released in theaters on October 1, 2021.

Tom Hanks is sticking with biopics for his next big screen role.
According to People, Tom Hanks could be joining director Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley biopic.
Hanks is currently in negotiations to play the King’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Parker, who discovered Presley in 1955, was instrumental in landing the rock ’n’ roll icon his recording contract with RCA. He’s also credited for helping Presley get his start in Hollywood as a successful actor.
There’s currently no word on who might be joining Hanks in the biopic, but sources say the Romeo + Juliet director is looking to cast a newcomer to take on the role of Presley himself.
In addition to helming the biopic, Luhrmann will also be co-writing the script along with Craig Pearce.
As for Hanks, the Academy Award-winning star is no stranger to portraying real life people on the big screen.
Most recently, Hanks took on the role of Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee in the Oscar-nominated drama, The Post. Currently, the Forrest Gump star is wrapping up work on Sony’s Mister Rogers biopic, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
Up next, fans can catch Hanks reprising his role as Woody in Disney Pixar’s Toy Story 4, due out in theaters on June 21, 2019.
