Warner Bros. Tom and Jerry added two more celebrities to their already star-studded cast for the upcoming live-action adaptation.
Hopefully the live-action cats of Cats haven’t turned you off from the idea completely, because we have another live-action adaptation involving a cat — and a mouse — headed our way.
The film will be directed by Tim Story, whose director credits include Ride Along, Think Like a Man and the 2019 Shaft reboot, and already boasts a rather impressive cast of Colin Jost, Chloe Grace Moretz and Michael Pena.
Joining the cast will be comedians Ken Jeong — of Community and The Hangover fame — and Rob Delaney — writer and co-star of the fantastic comedy, Catastrophe.
Jordan Bolger (from The 100) and Pallavi Sharda (featured in Lion and Beecham House) will also be joining the cast.
Though Tom and Jerry’s heyday began 1940 — with seven of their animated shorts winning Oscars from 1943-53 — they’ve enjoyed relative popularity within pop-culture since then, even getting their own feature-length movie in 1993.
However, that movie was animated, whereas this movie has been described by Warner Bros. as being a “live-action hybrid” — though exactly what that means is still somewhat of a mystery.
The upcoming live-action hybrid will follow Tom (the cat) and Jerry (the mouse) after they get kicked out of their home and are forced to relocate to a fancy, upscale New York hotel.
That’s all well and good until character Kayla (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) gets a job at said hotel and learns that she’ll wind up losing it if she can’t manage to evict Jerry before a high-class wedding at the hotel.
Her solution to this problem? Why, hiring Tom the piano player to get rid of the pesky mouse, of course!
Everything about this movie sounds absolutely zany, and I’m very interested (and perplexed) to see how it’ll fold out in all its live-action hybrid glory.
There’s no release date yet for the film, though IMDB has it listed as having a 2021 release. Looks like we’ll have to wait a couple of years before we understand what it means to be a live-action hybrid!
