In a customary manner, I would visit 9gag, a farcical site where the so-called ‘memes’ originated. As I was eagerly scrolling down for more amusing user-uploaded photos, I came across this picture just recently posted.
The picture does not depict a factual affirmation from J.K. Rowling or the books itself. It is possibly a theory from a fan.
At first glance, without really being cognizant of its ambiguous meaning, I forthwith thought that George, being a lighthearted, easy-going person, would not desire anything else, hence the hypothetical illustration above. Furthermore, Dumbledore explained to Harry that: “The happiest man on earth would look into the mirror and see only himself exactly as he is.” George, together with his twin, are the happier characters and sort of the comic relief in the series. That in mind, my first thought is that he sees himself in every mirror because he’s contented, and that’s about it.
Then it struck me. As identical twins, his own reflection on the mirror would also resonate the image of his beloved twin, Fred, whose demise caused him so much pain. The Mirror of Erised, in Dumbledore’s words, visually mimics the “deepest and most desperate desire of one’s heart.” It is, theoretically speaking, probable that he will see his twin when looking through the mystical mirror. That is what he desires, his brother.
And if the theory is indeed valid, he would have a left ear while looking through the mirror, but it’s not his, but Fred’s. Resultantly, every mirror now, in his vision, is technically, a mirror that shows not his face, but his heart’s desire.
I opined this theory is poignant and really powerful so I wanted to share it and hear your thoughts. What do you think George desires the most? Do you think George perceives every mirror as a Mirror of Erised?
