The Walking Dead season 8, episode 9, “Honor” marked Carl Grimes’ last episode and fans had a lot to say about it.
I’ve already written about The Walking Dead killing off Carl Grimes this season, including how the show will be negatively affected by Carl’s absence as well as a look at how Carl’s final episode went down. However, this morning I was interested to see how other fans would be reacting to the episode.
To my surprise, there wasn’t as much anger as I was expecting. It seems, perhaps, that having some time to digest what was about to happen might have helped prepare fans. That doesn’t mean that they were accepting of the decision. However, instead of feeling loads of rage while watching Carl’s final moments they were able to mourn him properly.
This might be the only good thing that I can say about how the show handled Carl’s death. I don’t think that any fans wanted to see the character to go, especially given how pivotal his character is to the group’s future. There is something to be said for the amount of time and effort was given to make sure that his character was given the respect that he deserved though.
Chandler Riggs was given all of the space and time to allow his character to go out shining. Unlike some other deaths on the show where everything happened so quickly and fans just had to deal with it, this time around the fans knew what was coming. I think that really affected how fans reacted to the episode after the fact.

For those of you wounded over #TheWalkingDead take solace in the fact that while Scott Gimple wasn't technically demoted/fired, all he can do now is oversee the show, not affect it.

In Carl’s defense he only had one eye to see. The walker bit him in his blind spot. #twd #TheWalkingDead #RipCarl pic.twitter.com/xxLS5g8dIF

You spent all of your teen years, bought a house near the set, and after being accepted to the College of your choice, you delayed going for a year in the name of making this show your top priority. Thank you @chandlerriggs #RipCarl pic.twitter.com/F58jSkgEqO
