The Vampire Diaries season 5, episode 5, “Monster’s Ball” has come and gone, and now it’s time to discuss it amongst ourselves. Check out our recap and share your thoughts!
First of all, Happy Halloween everyone! We hope everyone enjoyed this episode of The Vampire Diaries, full of fun costumes from Bonnie & Clyde to Dr Jekyll. Despite the Halloween fun, there was a lot going on last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries so let’s just dive right in to the happenings of the episode entitled, “Monster’s Ball”:
- We begin with creepy Professor Maxfield tempting the now in transition Jesse with human blood. He is studying his reactions to blood-deprivation and other external stimuli.
- Elena is writing in her diary again, only this time from Whitmore College. She talks all about missing Bonnie and how easily others are moving on.
- Damon is on campus to be Elena’s date to the costume ball. Elena has been surprisingly distant from him, only texting him once, and he seems puzzled.
- Tyler and Caroline are back together and coupling in Caroline and Elena’s dorm room. Tyler is actively avoiding all the college talk that Caroline is trying to force him into.
- Elena confronts a boy that is mourning at the memorial set up for Megan, the girl that roomed with Caroline and Elena for a very short, well, day, before she was killed. He does not believe the “suicide” story that has been listed as her cause of death. He refuses to give Elena his name and stalks off.
- Nadia and Silas are playing power games as Katherine starts to get on Nadia’s nerves. Nadia tells Katherine that Silas has to drain her dry to get the cure from her body — every last drop of blood.
- Damon talks to Jeremy about trying to exchange Bonnie’s life for Silas’ life. He wants to work with Silas by helping him die by destroying Qetsyiah’s mystical anchor for the ‘other side.’ In return for Bonnie’s life, Silas wants Damon to kill Stefan.
- Nadia wants answers from Katherine, so in a supernatural version of 20 questions, Nadia wants to know why Katherine killed her mother, Lilia Thomas, in Paris. Nadia had herself turned into a vampire to hunt Katherine. Katherine ends the encounter by stabbing Nadia and running off.
- Bonnie and Jeremy fight about whether or not they should let Damon try his genius plan to bring Bonnie back from the dead. Jeremy is not satisfied with his girlfriend being on the other side, so she reluctantly agrees to let Damon try.
- Back at Whitmore College, Caroline and Tyler show up to the costume ball as Bonnie and Clyde, with Stefan as James Dean. Stefan asks Caroline to dance.
- Elena’s distance to Damon is all about her guilt over spending her summer happy with Damon while Bonnie was dead. She then fills Damon in on her investigation into Megan’s death, starting with the mysterious male friend that we saw earlier.
- When prompted via compulsion, Megan’s friend, Aaron, tells Elena that people around him always die. A feeling she is more than familiar with.
- Tessa (aka Qetsyiah) shows up to the ball as Cleopatra and introduces herself to Stefan. Damon has set Stefan up by bringing Silas to the ball. When Damon snaps Stefan’s neck, Silas gets his abilities back.
- Silas tries to sweet talk Tessa into lowering her defenses so he can find out where the anchor for the other side is. Tessa tells him that she needs to find her pendant (which is a part of the artifact display in the room) in order to boost her powers, allowing her to locate the anchor that the Travelers have been moving constantly since her death centuries ago.
- Damon continues to repeatedly kill Stefan, allowing Silas to keep his abilities, but every time he awakes, Stefan gets more and more agitated with Damon.
- Nadia is having trouble removing the wooden pole that Katherine shoved into her chest due to it being so close to her heart. They then discuss how the story from earlier about Katherine killing Nadia’s mother was fake.
- In a major twist, Nadia reveals that she is the baby that Katerina Petrova gave up many, many years ago. (Talk about a big reveal!)
- Professor Maxfield shows up at the ball as Dr. Jekyll, and in one of his creepier moves, asks Elena to dance. As they dance, Elena calls him out for lying on Megan’s death certificate, and he responds by warning her to pack up, go home, and leave Whitmore College behind before the people that are watching her and her friends do something horrible.
- Tyler is upset that Klaus seems to be calling all the shots in his life. He reveals that he only returned to tell Caroline goodbye before he hunts Klaus down to destroy his life just as Klaus destroyed his.
- Tessa finds her pendant, which gives her powers the boost she needed to find the anchor. Just as she is about to tell Silas (who is posing as Stefan) where it was, Stefan comes back to life and snaps Damon’s neck, then outs Silas to Tessa.
- Tessa cuts off the blood flow to Silas’ heart, effectively and instantly desiccating him.
- Aaron and Maxfield have an encounter, telling us that Maxfield is his legal guardian and responsible for him.
- Tessa’s killing Silas puts a damper on Damon’s plan to revive Bonnie.
- Katherine tells Nadia that she went back looking for her eight years after she gave her up, but could not find her. Nadia seems to soften to Katherine.
- Tyler packs his things and leaves Caroline. She begs him to love her more than he hates Klaus, and he admits that he can’t. She then tells him that if he takes one more step away from her, they are done, and he walks out the door. Poor Caroline.
- Elena tells Damon all about Maxfield’s warning, when there’s a knock on the door. Damon summoned Katherine back to the Salvatore mansion, and she doesn’t seem to realize what kind of trouble she is in. Damon needs Katherine’s blood to cure Silas, making him a witch again so he can send Bonnie back to the world again. Damon bites Katherine and pushes her into Silas’ arms, feeding her to him, and killing her. Silas returns, cured, as Katherine drops lifelessly to the floor.
- Apparently having all her blood drained isn’t enough to kill Katherine, as Damon and Elena hear her heart start again as she wakes up to ask them, “Am I in Hell?”
What an episode, huh? We got tons of fun new information, including the bits about the ‘other side’ being anchored to earth by a movable object that is in the hands of the Travelers, Nadia being Katherine’s daughter from the 1400s, Tyler leaving again, and Silas now being a cured witch that will hopefully be restoring Bonnie to her body.
