For all those that have been waiting patiently (and not so patiently), the time has come for this epic couple to give in to the tension because Klaroline was clearly meant to be.
Warning: This post contains pretty significant The Vampire Diaries spoilers. Read on at your own risk!
If you think that Klaroline should stay friends or that it’s just not their time, make sure you check out the “Klaroline should not be endgame” post, written by TVD superfan, Kendra!
Since that first fateful manipulation by Klaus, these two have been on a collision course for each other, and it’s about time for impact. Vampire Diaries fans know that their first interaction was thanks to Klaus’ need to flex his control over his freshly sired hybrid, Tyler, as well as fire a shot across the bow in his war against Stefan as well. Tyler bit Caroline, infecting her and sentencing her to death. Enter Klaus Mikaelson, and his Original hybrid super-blood as the only cure.
Only Klaus didn’t realize what he was starting. His ensuing conversation with Caroline revealed a softer side to him, one that only Caroline seemed to bring out, and their epic will-they/won’t-they dance began.
Since then, they’ve had a few interactions, all of which have had Klaroline shippers the world over chanting, “More, more, MORE!” as the chemistry between these two characters pulsed with heat and affection. No interaction fueled this fire more than Klaus’ incredible graduation present for Caroline, complete with the grand declaration, “He was your first love. I intend to be your last. However long it takes.” *SWOON*
By letting Caroline be free to fall in and out of love with Tyler (and later to tragically fall for Stefan), Klaus did what so many others couldn’t: He wasn’t trying to control her. And when you think about it, that is one hell of an accomplishment for Klaus, as control is pretty much his bottom line. The number of times that Klaus has relinquished control can probably be counted on one hand, and as he’s like a thousand years old that’s really saying something.
And I’m not saying that it can’t take a while. Hell, I’d be happy with the two of them walking off into the sunset at the end of The Originals as friends with a hint at the epic tension that cannot be ignored forever. Klaus and Caroline have taught each other so much, and they challenge each other more than anyone else in their lives.
Love for them will not be easy or boring, that’s for sure, but I really do believe that it would make them both the best version of themselves. Especially after all the changes that Klaus has undergone since Hope was born. He’s definitely more compassionate and understanding, and absolutely more capable of committing to one love for the rest of his existence.
And thanks to The Originals time jumps, Caroline has had enough time to mother two girls into their adolescence and properly mourn her lost love. Time heals all wounds and hopefully Caroline has had enough of it to be ready for love again, one last time.
So (despite all Julie Plec’s warnings) I am throwing myself all in to shipping them this season. We know that Caroline appears in the premiere, and in a few episodes throughout The Originals final run, so there are plenty of opportunities for surprises.
Also, how genius would it be of Julie to warn us to temper our expectations, only to have them blown away in the series finale? One can only hope… and watch of course to see what happens when The Originals returns to our lives on Wednesday, April 18.
