The Nanny will gets its Broadway musical debut thanks to the talents of Fran Drescher and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom.
’90s sitcom The Nanny is the latest in a long line of iconic TV shows to get a second chance at the spotlight, only instead of a TV show revival like so many of its ’80s and ’90s sitcom peers, The Nanny will be heading to the Broadway stage!
Today Brian Zeilinger and Scott Zeilinger, the producers of the upcoming show, announced that The Nanny is in development to become a Broadway musical. What’s more, the musical will boast an impressive creative cast, as series creators Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson will be on board to write the show’s book, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom and Adam Schlesinger will write the music.
In an official statement, Fran Drescher and Peter Marc Jacobson said that they are “SO excited to be working on the Broadway musical The Nanny. We’re equally excited that the wildly talented Rachel Bloom will be writing the lyrics and music with the fantastic Adam Schlesinger, and to have the brilliant Marc Bruni directing. Nobody is cast yet — we’re plotting — but we feel confident we will find a fabulous actress who is funny, charming and has a great voice.”
And while Drescher is known for her iconic portrayal of the titular Nanny, when asked about reprising the role, she said, “Of course I would do it myself but we’d have to change the title to The Granny.”
The hit CBS sitcom ran for six years, from 1993 to 1999, and earned 12 Emmy nominations in that time.
The Nanny was partially inspired by Drescher’s Queens upbringing and followed Drescher as Fine, a cosmetics saleswoman who begins the series by getting fired and dumped. She then takes on a job as a nanny for three spoiled children whose father is English Broadway producer and widower, Maxwell Sheffield.
Over the course of the show, Fine and Sheffield develop romantic feelings, which doesn’t escape the notice of Maxwell’s butler Niles, who roots for the pairing after seeing how well Fine connects with and treats the children for whom she nannies.
