The Mandalorian hasn’t even had its season 2 premiere yet, but it looks like we already have season 3 to look forward to!
According to Variety, who first reported the news, sources close to the show have confirmed that The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau has already begun pre-production for the third season of the hit TV show.
Favreau has reportedly already been writing season 3 for a while now, with Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang leading the art department in creating concepts for season 3 as well.
Though the series has yet to be officially renewed by Disney+, work has already begun in pre-production because the show requires such a long lead time. For example, according to another source close to production of The Mandalorian, the production design department started to work on season 3 on April 20.
In many ways, The Mandalorian is luckier than most productions at this time. Season 2 of the show wrapped in early March, which means the series was able to finish work on season 2 before COVID-19 shut down most of the entertainment business.
The Mandalorian has become quite a draw for Disney’s new streaming platform Disney+. In addition to the show’s upcoming second season, the streaming service recently announced that it would likewise be releasing an eight-episode documentary series on the making of the show, which will “pull back the curtain on The Mandalorian, with each chapter exploring a different facet of the first live-action Star Wars television show through interviews, never-before-seen footage, and roundtable conversations hosted by Jon Favreau.”
Though the third season has yet to be confirmed by Disney+, it seems almost guaranteed at this point given the wide critical acclaim and commercial success of the show’s first season.
And though we don’t know too much of what to expect even with the second season, it has also recently been rumored that Rosario Dawson will be joining the show in season 2 in a guest-starring role as Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice. Though Dawson has yet to confirm the news herself, she has hinted strongly that it was all but a done deal in recent interviews.
