Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino have addressed the recent leak of several episodes of The Legend of Korra season 3.
The Legend of Korra season 3 got off to a bumpy and decidedly unofficial start earlier this week, when episodes three through six of “Book 3: Change” were released by Nickelodeon’s Mexican affiliate, MundoNick. Now co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Mike DiMartino have shared their thoughts on the unexpected snafu.
“It is bad enough that it happened at all,” Konietzko wrote on his Tumblr, “But it would have been a little less of a disaster had it at least been the first four episodes of the season.” The release of later episodes led to “confusion and, at least on our end of things, frustration.”
Konietzko emphasized that part of that frustration is due to the scrambling of The Legend of Korra‘s linear storylines. “These episodes take a ton of concerted effort from scores of individuals,” he continued. “We craft these continuous storylines and the animation as best we can, and hope that they are presented in a way that allows everyone to enjoy them to the fullest. But when leaks happen, the work we meticulously prepared for the audience is fumbled unceremoniously.”
Perhaps ironically, the fact that work on The Legend of Korra season 3 was completed fairly early is part of why the leak was possible. Finished episodes are sent to various affiliates for translation and dubbing, and Konietzko observed, “the longer the episodes sit on all these shelves all over the world, the probability of leaks increases.”
“It’s been a frustrating couple of days for sure,” co-creator Mike DiMartino added. DiMartino also asked fans to refrain from sharing spoilers from the released episodes. “Watching the story in sequence, as it is intended will be much more satisfying, I assure you.”
As small positive to the situation, Konietzko did mention that Nickelodeon “has some plans in the works for [The Legend of Korra season 3] and needs to wait on its release.” He concluded that “hopefully, it won’t be too much longer before Book 3 is released properly and with respect to all the people who worked hard to make it and to the audience who wants to watch it.”
