Catching Fire – Character Bios

Katniss Everdeen

The main character whose point of view the story is told from. Upon returning home to District 12 from winning the 74th Hunger Games, she is threatened by the government as someone who holds a threat of rebellion. She is abruptly thrown back into the Hunger Games, only to escape by blowing up the arena with some of her other tributes. This act sets a rebellion into motion.

Peeta Mellark

A winner of the 74th Hunger Games with Katniss Everdeen also from District 12. He is selected as a tribute for the 75th Hunger Games. Although some tributes escaped with the rebels, Peeta is obtained by the government which poses a threat of great danger for him.

Haymitch Abernathy

Winner of the 50th Hunger Games and resident of District 12. He is a mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the 75th Hunger Games. Haymitch is a large part of the brewing rebellion. He picks up Katniss along with other tributes when the arena of the Hunger Games is destroyed.

Gale Hawthorne

The best friend of Katniss Everdeen who takes care of her family as she competes in the Hunger Games. He is part of the rescue team that picks up tributes from the arena once destroyed.

Mrs. Everdeen

The mother of Katniss Everdeen and healer of District 12. When Katniss returns a victor of the Hunger Games, Mrs. Everdeen begins helping the people of the district for free as she now has the means.

Primrose Everdeen

Primrose, or Prim, is the younger sister of Katniss Everdeen. Once Katniss wins the 74th Hunger Games, Prim finally has the resources to heal and help people which is all she has ever wanted to do.

Effie Trinket

Government official who is responsible for getting the tributes of District 12 prepared to enter the Hunger Games. She is in charge of Katniss and Peeta from the time they leave their district until they enter the arena.

Finnick Odair

Tribute in the 75th Hunger games from District 4. He maintained an alliance with Katniss and Peeta through the games and was subsequently rescued when the arena was annihilated.

Johanna Mason

From District 7, Johanna is a fellow tribute in the 75th Hunger Games. At first, she is not welcomed by Katniss, but eventually forms an alliance with her. She is abducted by the Capitol once the arena has fallen.

Beetee

District 3 tribute in the 75th Hunger Games. He is the one that initially attempts to blow up the arena as a part of the alliance with Katniss. The rebels rescue him after Katniss destroys the arena.

Plutarch Heavensbee

Government official and Head Gamemaker of the 75th Hunger Games. It is discovered that he is a guiding force behind the rebellion taking place. He makes sure all weapons needed to escape were provided in the games and steals the hovercraft that ends up saving some of the tributes.

President Coriolanus Snow

The president of Panem, the country the story takes place in. He informs Katniss her spark of rebellion has gotten too far and to save it before an outbreak happens. If she cannot do this, he will greatly endanger her life. His hovercraft is what abducts the tributes who are not saved by the rebels.
