The full trailer for the film adaptation of Angie Thomas’ smash hit novel The Hate U Give released on Sunday, and it’s incredibly powerful.
Those who have read Angie Thomas’ New York Times best-selling book The Hate U Give know how timely and moving this story is, but now a whole new audience is being introduced to the brave Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg). During the BET Awards on Sunday night, the first full trailer for the film was released, and it will absolutely give you chills.
The Hate U Give tells the story of Starr Carter, a teenager who lives in a primarily Black neighborhood but attends a predominately white high school. Starr lives a sort of “double life” in the two environments, but her worlds come crashing down when she witnesses a white police officer fatally shoot her unarmed, Black, friend Khalil. In the face of this injustice, Starr learns to find her voice, and do what she can to seek justice for her friend and help to create lasting change for her community.
While it’s horrifically unfortunate that this film continues to be such a timely one as the news seems to constantly bear the name of a new, unarmed, Black man shot by police, Starr’s story is nothing short of inspiring. She’s a great role model for young, Black girls to see on the big screen, and there isn’t a greater message to send to kids than to use your voice to fight for justice and what’s right.
If the trailer is any indication, The Hate U Give is going to be just as powerful and have just as big of an impact as the book did. Unfortunately, we’ve got a bit of a wait before the movie lands in theaters on October 19, but that just means we’ll have to re-read the book before the movie premiere!
