The Green Knight teaser trailer gives us our first look at Dev Patel as one of King Arthur’s most storied knights.
Stories about King Arthur and his knights will always be popular, if not necessarily profitable, as Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur showed.
However, the newest film to step in to Arthurian legend won’t be focused on the storied king himself, but rather his nephew, Sir Gawain.
Director David Lowery’s The Green Knight will include King Arthur, but will instead follow the trials and adventures of his young nephew Sir Gawain in what looks to be a moody and atmospheric medieval fantasy epic.
Check out the trailer below!
The Green Knight is billed as a fantasy retelling of the Arthurian legend Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The film follows King Arthur’s reckless nephew Sir Gawain as he embarks on a quest to find and confront the titular Green Knight, who viewers get a first look at in the final seconds of the trailer. Along the way, Gawain is forced to contend with ghosts, giants, thieves, and a whole host of mysterious figures in a quest that becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth to his family and the kingdom itself.
The original 700 year old Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight ends somewhat anticlimactically in terms of modern day storytelling standards, so it will be interesting to see if this fantasy retelling will follow suit or take its own path.
The film stars Dev Patel as Sir Gawain and Mission Impossible villain Sean Harris as his uncle King Arthur, with Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, and Alicia Vikander as mysterious figures he meets on his quest to find and confront The Green Knight, who is played by Ralph Ineson.
The Green Knight is the latest film from indie darling director David Lowery, whose previous features were Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon, The Old Man & the Gun, along with the critically acclaimed A Ghost Story, which grossed $1.9 million against a budget of $100,000.
The Green Knight will be released in theaters on May 29.
