If you like your royal drama fun, funny, and more than a little bit anachronistic, then Hulu has you covered with the upcoming series The Great.
The series is set to be a satirical, comedic drama about the rise of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest reigning female ruler in Russia’s history.
Catherine the Great was most recently dramatized by HBO, with Helen Mirren playing the reigning ruler in her later years. However, while that show was a historical drama with a decidedly serious tone, from the looks of the trailer, Hulu’s take promises to be a much more breezy and fast-paced — and much less historically accurate.
Check out the trailer below, followed by the official synopsis for the show!
Season 1 of The Great is a fictionalized, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside. A very modern story about the past which encompasses the many roles she played over her lifetime as lover, teacher, ruler, friend, and fighter.
The Great stars Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great and Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter. The show also features Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
The show was created, written and executive produced by Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara, who wrote the Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated 2018 film The Favourite.
The Great premieres on Hulu on May 15.
