NBC’s The Good Place ended its first season on a major cliffhanger, but good news: Kristen Bell and the gang are officially returning for season 2.
After that finale, it’s honestly a bit of a shock that The Good Place‘s season 2 renewal wasn’t in the bag, but in fact, NBC only just confirmed that the show would return.
The half-hour comedy stars Veronica Mars’ Kristen Bell as Eleanor, a ‘bad’ person who dies and is seemingly sent to the ‘Good Place’ by accident. She enlists her faux-soulmate Chidi (William Jackson Harper) to help her become a better person, only to find that she’s not the only impostor in paradise — and their presence soon threatens to ruin everything.

Coming from Mike Schur, who also brought us the incredible Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Office, the first season of The Good Place was an instant hit, cute and quirky and seeming like a fun, safe world to escape into. But not so fast! The season 1 finale introduced a huge plot twist that changed everything, and officially elevated The Good Place from ‘just’ a good comedy to a genre-defying, experimental and much more interesting viewing experience.
We can’t wait to see Eleanor, Chidi and the gang (including my favorite character Tahani, played to perfection by Jameela Jamil) back for season 2, which according to The Hollywood Reporter will also be 13 episodes long.
And speaking of Tahani: There is another reason to (potentially) be excited for season 2 of The Good Place. In one maybe-throwaway, maybe-not moment, Eleanor has the realization that she may be attracted to Tahani. However the show tackles the ambiguous concept of ‘soulmates’ moving forward, this revelation could lead to a bigger storyline for Tahani and Eleanor in season 2, which would be most welcome on what is a great, but unfortunately predominately heteronormative, show.
Whatever happens with that storyline, I’m excited for this renewal news (but obviously will be even more invested if they incorporate the LGBTQ+ representation they hinted at in the finale).
Says NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke in a statement:
“Mike Schur has always had one of the most fertile and imaginative minds in comedy, but what he brought us with the first season of The Good Place was just extraordinary. We absolutely can’t wait to see where these characters go, literally, in season two. A big thank-you to Mike, the writers and cast for delivering a series in which we all take such enormous pride.”
