On The Flash season 6, episode 10, following “Crisis on Infinite Earths” and Oliver’s death, we finally get to see Barry and Team Flash adjust to their post-crisis reality… and watch Barry grieve for his fallen friend.
The Flash season 6, episode 10 is an episode that will leave a lasting impact on the fans and the characters. While the first half of the season focused so heavily on the impending “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event and Barry’s prophesied disappearance, and did a really lackluster job at doing so, The Flash is back and ready to kick some ass. And, as a bonus, though the Arrow series finale aired on Tuesday, we get a visit from Diggle!
We obviously had a chance to view the episode early, and we’ve put together a few teases about what’s to come in the episode! As always, if those aren’t your thing, scroll down to see of spoiler-free review.
‘The Flash’ season 6, episode 10 screener secrets
Iris West-Allen: Reporter Extraordinaire
Taking center stage during the episode is Candice Patton’s Iris West-Allen, whose journalism arc has been heavily teased and highly anticipated since before the season began. And as frustrating as the wait has been, damn, was it worth it.
In my opinion, Candice Patton gives one of her best (top 5) performances of the series. Iris is bold, clever, and determined to get the story that she’s working on, and this story certainly leads her to some interesting places. While investigating the shady, secret organization that Allegra’s cousin, Esperanza, was working for, Iris follows the clues to and finds herself wrapped up in such an intense, complicated mystery. It’s beautiful and feels like the story we’ve been waiting for Iris to have.
The Flash season 6, episode 10 is only the very beginning of what’s to come, particularly with Iris and what is actually going to be an arc for her. Assisting Iris with her story is Team Citizen, including Cecile as their legal counsel (which is actually a great move because she makes a very interesting fourth party to this group), but don’t worry: Iris is remaining in charge, and she has some of her most bad ass scenes of the entire series on this episode.
While we get quite a few scenes of Iris with characters outside of Team Flash and Team Citizen, she has really great moments with the the two most important people in her life: Barry and Joe.
Diggle’s arrival
Diggle’s arrival on The Flash season 6, episode 10 is definitely what takes the majority of Barry’s focus. As seen in the picture above, Diggle brings the mask that Barry gave to Oliver — Oliver’s first mask — as one of Oliver’s final requests. Oliver’s presence is still heavily felt with Barry.
Still reeling from the loss of his friend and his grief over it, the mask leads Barry on an adventure, to a very familiar setting, where he uncovers something both very expected and unexpected that Oliver wanted him to know.
And spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen the Arrow series finale, but if you’re hoping to find out what happened to Diggle after that Green Lantern tease, don’t hold your breath. This episode of The Flash takes place before the events of the Arrow finale.
(Remember, shooting for this episode happened while Grant was shooting “Crisis on Infinite Earths” so just keep that in mind.)
Team Flash
From the episode, it definitely seems like J’onn gave everyone their memories back. (The only uncertainty is Ralph, who was inexplicably missing from the episode, though I bet his were returned as well.) With that knowledge, as seen in the trailer below, Cisco is kind of freaking out about being on Earth-Prime and all of the changes to the timeline and physics. (While discussing the changes, Cisco confirms the fate of two characters on Earth-Prime, which is very disappointing.)
We see Cisco with both Frost and Caitlin, mostly, and each share some great moments. But there’s a really great scene of Caitlin and Cisco in the episode, and their beautiful friendship is always nice to see.
Meanwhile, of infinite versions of Harrison Wells in the previous multi-verse, we’re stuck with Nash, and Cisco definitely shares our feelings about that, but it wouldn’t be The Flash if they didn’t talk about their feelings.
‘The Flash’ season 6, episode 10 spoiler-free review
Honestly, the first half of The Flash season 6 was not my favorite. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” really did a number on the quality of the show because the buildup was just… bland and boring. We knew Barry wouldn’t disappear, so the stakes were non-existent. The fact that, in reality, nothing really changed on the show other than the Earths merging to be Earth-Prime is not surprising.
Without a doubt, The Flash season 6, episode 10 is the best of the season. Without the crisis looming, for the first time ever, The Flash is free to tell a story that doesn’t have a deadline. We always knew the crisis was coming, so everything had to lead to that moment.
The second best part of the episode, aside from Iris’ entire plot, is all of the talk about Earth-Prime. A few names from other shows are thrown in, and for the first time, the Arrow-verse really feels so connected. It’s beautiful that these heroes and shows are all coming together.
After this episode of The Flash (that is by far the best mid-season premiere of the bunch), for the first time this season, I am so excited to see the next episode, especially after the (spoiler alert) MAJOR cliffhanger at the end. Welcome back, The Flash. It’s so nice to see that there are, finally, great things ahead.
