The Flash hit San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend and we learned a lot at the panel. Before the show met with the fans, Hypable had the opportunity to ask the cast a few questions.
Season 4 of The Flash has just begun shooting, and while the actors don’t know what’ll happen across the full season, we were still able to learn about the little they’ve done, and expand on season 3.
Here are a few of our favorite things that we learned at the press roundtables.
- According to executive producer Todd Helbing, Iris really takes up the mantle as team leader in season 4, and everyone picks up the slack from Barry’s disappearance really well.
And how does Iris handle it? Candice Patton had a lot to say. “Without Barry, without Caitlin, we were kind of a shell of our former selves so Iris steps up and kicks ass. At the end of season 3 Barry said to Iris, ‘keep moving, keep going’ and she took that very seriously. She’s dealing with the sadness and depression of Barry not being there by focusing on work, and work only.
She’s a very different Iris than we’ve seen in the past. A little hardened and in general she’s gotta protect the city, and she’s gotta do what she’s gotta do. “
- Every cast member and the executive producer highlighted how much lighter this season is going to be compared to the last. Helbing said, “Last season was really as dark as we would want to get.”
How much lighter? According to several cast members the first couple of scripts have a lot more comedy in them. “It was awesome reading the first couple scripts seeing so much more comedy,” Carlos Valdez said when discussing the changes in tone.
“And I keep getting caught talking about how good my butt looks in the Vibe suit,” Valdez joked. Everyone is having so much more fun this season, including off set! If the season is anything like the vibe in the press room, it’s going to be great.
- There is definitely going to be a crossover this season, and according to Helbing it’s a “true four parter,” so each show in the WBDC series will have an episode dedicated to it, just like this past season.
And what about a musical episode? Everyone would love to do one, but there isn’t anything in the cards right now. But you never know, they’re only two episodes into filming!
- As you can see from the trailer, Cisco will have a few things up his sleeve to get Barry back and he’ll have a huge hand in getting that done during the premiere. As far as being without Barry for six months or losing HR? Valdez said, “He handles it more gracefully, and he helps pick up the slack a lot.”
But what about Gypsy? Last season Cisco realized he had a connection to her, and Valdez was definitely excited to talk about it!
“Thank you for bringing that up!” he said. “The relationship with Gypsy is definitely going to continue and get more involved. As the relationship gets more involved, and Cisco wants to take it to the next level he’s going to encounter some characters that are going to make that difficult for him.”
- When Barry comes back the team will have had six months to operate without him. We asked Grant Gustin how Barry might have changed after his experience in the speed force.
“The first episode is called ‘Reborn,’ and we’re gonna get to see Barry get back to his more optimistic self. He’s gonna appreciate his powers again and let go of the hardship he’s had to deal with, the loss, etc. He’ll get back to the Barry I think everyone wants him to be.”
We can’t wait to see what season 4 has in store for our favorite speedster and his friends! And be sure to check out all of our other awesome Comic-Con coverage this year.
